The Chipko movement began in Uttarakhand, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The movement emerged as a peasant and women's protest for forest rights. Chipko means "to cling," and that's what the protesters did. They clung to the trees to prevent them from being cut down. This painting was inspired by an original photo from the 1974 protest. These protests gave birth to modern environmental movements and coined the term "treehugger." Their efforts were successful, and in 1980, Indira Ghandi approved a 15 year ban on commercial felling of trees in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.
