Ishtar, also known as Inanna, was the original Divine Mother Goddess, Queen of Heaven, as early as 4000 BC. She is the first deity of any kind we have found in recorded history. She is referred to in cuneiform, the written language of the Sumerians. Her symbols are the lion and the eight pointed star, as well as the planet Venus. The Assyrians and Babylonians also worshipped her, and elevated her above all other deities. In later mythology, she became more warlike, having been tricked into becoming trapped in the underworld. I've depicted her here before her underworld adventure, in her motherly form.
Ishtar is usually depicted with her foot on the lion, rather than alongside the lion. I took artistic license with this, because I object to man's drive to conquer nature, rather than act as stewards of nature. As a mother myself, I do not feel Ishtar/Inanna would have had the cruelty that was imposed on her by men writing her myth. And, if she did become more hardened by her difficult experiences, I do not believe she would have displaced her wrath on nature.
